Berklee Alumni Column #2: Angie Polizzi

Joely Cromack-Kluko

February is the perfect month for love songs, which is why I’m especially excited to introduce you to Angie Polizzi. A 2024 Berklee graduate from Long Island, NY, Angie is a rock-pop singer-songwriter with a knack for lyricism and personal brand development. At Berklee, she majored in Pro Music, concentrating on songwriting, performance, and music business. Since graduating, she has immersed herself in the NYC music scene by collaborating with performers and producers who join her in gigging and creating original music. She regularly participates in music networking events and recording sessions both in and outside of the Berklee alumni sphere.

On top of developing her career, she works as a private instructor at the New York Musician Center, where she teaches piano, guitar, voice, and violin. When asked if Berklee prepared her for this, she referred to her ensembles and lessons in stage technique: “Those classes helped me realize that playing your instrument is half the battle, and stage etiquette is the other half.” We agreed that how you present yourself while performing and how you interact with the stage crew can make or break the success of a gig. She is also part of the promotions team at Connoisseur Media, where she helps organize marketing events for their country radio station, The Wolf. She shared that her Berklee peers’ emphasis on networking and knowing your audience proves useful in promoting the station. Angie applies both her performance knowledge and marketing skills in her work, so she is well-positioned to promote her career as an artist.

Over the past two years, Angie has written, recorded, and released three singles, which feature a range of genres from slow indie-pop to hard rock. In November of 2024, she released her latest song, “Mean.” Its heavy rock sound effectively delivers intense, emotional lyrics. Angie sings with an empowering edge while singing about the complicated feelings that come with confronting an abuser.

When asked how Berklee influenced her songwriting, Angie explained that being introduced to prosody expanded her “songwriter’s toolbox.” Studying harmony and lyric writing opened her mind to new ways of expressing herself uniquely. Angie’s lyrics come straight from her heart. She touches on pain and love in a way that creates an emotional connection with her listeners. In her advice to fellow songwriters she said, “Write when you don’t want to write. Write about the things that are hard to talk about—that’s proof of passion.”

Angie also stressed the importance of balancing writing for herself and appealing to her audience. “I write authentically, but I also pay attention to what resonates with my audience. The mix of artistry and music business creates a brand.” This balance is evident in how she advertises her music. Angie uses social media to promote her songs in a way that feels true to herself and relates to her audience. Her promotional posts are images of her and the East Coast city nightlife.

After graduation, Angie was anxious about moving out of Boston. “I did worry about what was next, but I felt like I was leaving a life behind in Boston and that was heartbreaking.” With both of us being from New York, I relate to the anxiety of transitioning to a much larger music scene outside of Berklee. However, since being home, Angie found that Berklee is alive and well in NYC. She recruited musicians to gig with at a Manhattan-based Berklee Alumni event, Pass the Aux, where artists and producers can connect by sharing their music. She also performed in Brooklyn at pinkFROG Cafe at a live improv session with musicians from all over the city.

Regarding how she feels now, Angie stated “The worrying was warranted, but I just had to research and jump into it. The opportunities are out there.”

Look for gig announcements from Angie in the Spring of 2025 on Instagram. She is also currently recording a house-pop EP. Angie would like to share that her DMs are always open for collaboration with performers and producers. Her music can be found on Spotify and Apple Music under Angie Polizzi.

It was my pleasure interviewing such a multitalented songwriter and performer. I’ll leave with some final words from Angie:

“Redirect your pain into creation. It’s hard work, but that passion is a power. Embrace it.”
