Submission Guidelines

FUSION, Berklee’s global arts magazine, publishes writing in all genres, photography, video, and music by students, faculty, staff, and alumni from across the U.S. and our international communities. We feature distinguished guest artists, including three U.S. Poet Laureates, a U.K. Poet Laureate, National Book Award finalists, and writers whose awards include NEA, NEH, Guggenheim, and MacArthur fellowships, a PEN Award, and the Pulitzer Prize.

We read submissions from September through April.

See work by some of our guest artists here.

Note to Berklee Faculty: please write to us regarding the in-house Submission process.

Note to Berklee Students: we only consider work accompanied by a cover letter, even if you were asked to submit by a professor.

General Guidelines

Include a cover letter with relevant details (Berklee connection if any, title(s), your genre, contact information, and previous experience, e.g., publications, recordings, performances, or exhibitions.

Submit written work as MS Word or Pages attachments. At top of attached manuscript, provide contact information, full title, genre, page numbers in upper right, standard margins, and word count.

Always include a bio (75 words max) at the bottom of your Word manuscript.

Self-contained chapters of longer works will be considered.

Subject heading of email should read: Your Genre, Name, Title, and Date.

We accept simultaneous submissions. We only ask that you contact us if your piece has been published elsewhere so we might free up room for other artists.

Work not submitted according to guidelines will not be considered.

Fiction and Creative Nonfiction: 5,000 words maximum, double-spaced.

Poetry: Only one poem per page. Send no more than six (6) poems in ONE MS Word or Pages email attachment.

NB: For poems that have complex line breaks, submit both a Word/Pages doc AND a pdf.

Essays: Use MLA in-text citations, as we cannot publish work with footnotes on web pages due to HTML restrictions.

Drama & Film: We welcome plays and screenplays (from shorts/one-acts to full-length) as pdf files. We assume dramatists will compose using Final Draft (first choice) or other scriptwriting software in order to assure professional, standardized formatting.

Art, Photography, and Multimedia: Photographs must be at least 800 x 800 pixels. We will consider photographs of visual art, assuming they convey the essence of the work and present well online.

Music: Edited music videos that go beyond simply documenting a live performance. We will consider multimedia works, including audio files if accompanied by photos/images or text, i.e., material that will appeal to our broad online audience. Seven minutes maximum. Our preferred format for audio is MP3 and for video MP4. But these formats, as appropriate, are acceptable: M4a, OGG, WebM, FLV, MP3, and WAV.

Please note that given the ratio of the volume of submissions to the size of our staff, we regret sincerely that we are only able to reply if we will publish your work.
